A sound reaction time test measures how fast you respond to a noise instead of a light. The screen stays dark, a beep plays after a random wait, and you tap. In lab studies people react to sound about 30 to 50 ms faster than to light.

Why we react faster to sound

Hearing reaches the brain by a shorter, quicker route than vision. The ear turns sound into nerve signals almost instantly, while the eye needs a little longer to process light. Classic lab studies put simple auditory reactions around 140 to 160 ms and visual ones around 180 to 200 ms.

That is why sprint races start with a gun or beep, not a light. Online, device lag adds to both numbers, so compare this score with our classic test on the same device.

Getting a clean auditory result

Use wired headphones or the device speaker. Bluetooth headphones can delay sound by 100 ms or more, which will make you look slow. Keep the volume comfortable and the room quiet.

Tap only on the beep. Tapping during the silence counts as too early and restarts that round.

How it works

  1. 01

    Turn your sound up

This test always plays a beep, even if site sounds are off.

  2. 02

Tap when you hear the beep

The wait is random. Tapping early restarts the round.

  3. 03

    Compare with your visual score

After five beeps, compare your result with the classic light test.

Who uses this test

  • Sprinters checking how fast they react to a start signal
  • Students comparing auditory and visual reaction in a lab report
  • Gamers who rely on footstep sounds in shooters
  • Testing whether Bluetooth headphones add audio delay
  • Music students checking response timing to a click
  • Hearing a difference after a good night's sleep

Frequently asked questions

Is auditory reaction time faster than visual?

Yes, in most people. Lab studies show sound reactions about 30 to 50 ms faster than light reactions. Your online result may differ because of device and audio delay.

What is a good sound reaction time?

On a computer with wired audio, under 220 ms is good. Around 250 ms is typical online. Bluetooth audio can add enough delay to push you over 300 ms.

Why does this test play sound when I muted the site?

The beep is the signal, so the test cannot work without it. Site sound settings still control the extra effects in the other tests.

Do Bluetooth headphones slow my score?

Often, yes. Wireless audio is buffered and can arrive 100 to 200 ms late. Use wired headphones or the built-in speaker for a fair result.

Why do races start with a sound and not a light?

Sound triggers a faster response for most athletes. World Athletics treats a reaction under 0.1 seconds after the gun as a false start, because that is faster than a real response.

Can I improve my auditory reaction time?

Practice, rest and focus help a little. Most of the gain comes from staying alert and removing device lag rather than changing your ears.
